Stocks loses two attorneys on same day

Nothing dramatic behind county attorney exodus

Grand County Attorney Stephen Stocks lost his two attorneys, Colleen Magee and Eddy Cervantes, within hours last week.

Stocks said he was limited in what he could say about the resignations, except that they were not related and not the result of dissension in the office.

Citing prohibitions against speaking about personnel issues, Stocks would only say, “We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”

He intimated Cervantes, who recently passed the Utah State Bar, resigned because he wished to return home. He could not understand why Magee tendered her two-week notice a few hours later, because her letter was somewhat vague. He accepted both resignations.

Stocks said a job announcement has already been made and he’s pondering whether to hire just one attorney. Cervantes handled Justice Court cases and until recently couldn’t practice law, so Stocks will review the workload before deciding.

Magee was the face of Stocks’ office in the Seventh Judicial District Court. Both attorneys are holdovers from former Grand County Attorney Christina Sloan’s administration.
