Family honors von Zastrow with scholarship in her name

Grand residents, students can apply; donations accepted

Dave von Zastrow established a scholarship for Utah State University-Moab students in his late wife’s name for many reasons, but none more poignant than the primary reason: “I don’t want her to be forgotten.”

Jeanne von Zastrow

Jeanne von Zastrow died in January of 2019 and the endowed scholarship in her name was created afterwards.

“Jeanne was well loved in Moab,” said Dave, who wants students to be aware of this scholarship.

A USU graduate with a degree in business administration, von Zastrow was a high school teacher and mentor, teaching everything from business ethics to fashion, according to her biography on the USU-Moab website.

“She knew how to inspire students and make learning fun. Jeanne mentored dozens of young people throughout her life and rejoiced in their successes,” reads the bio.

She worked for the Reagan administration in Washington, D.C., and later she was a regional director for the Food Marketing Institute in California, where she was able to convince her employer to allow her to work remotely — from Moab. She might have suggested that Moab was a suburb of Salt Lake City, reads her bio, which her son Max wrote, along with family and friends.

“Jeanne changed lives,” wrote Max. “She made the world a kinder, beautiful, and more magical place. If you knew Jeanne von Zastrow, you’re likely a better person for it. Her integrity, empathy and open-mindedness were her way of life. She would be honored and humbled to know that she is memorialized forever, and that her legacy of giving will continue through this endowment scholarship fund.

“I believe that Jeanne von Zastrow lives on in each of us in the moments that we give, forgive, serve, and create.”
