Crash injures 3, lands another in jail

Three Moab residents were injured in a two-vehicle crash on state Route 279 on Monday, July 19. The accident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. about 13 miles from the turnoff to U.S. 191, according to a report from the Utah Highway Patrol when a Pontiac G6 driven by 27-year-old Moab man was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 19-year-old Moab man as the Jeep was attempting to pass the Pontiac. The front right side of the Jeep struck the front left side of the Pontiac, causing the Jeep to skid off the road and strike a boulder, according to a report from the Utah Highway Patrol. The driver of the Jeep and two passengers were transported by ambulance to Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment. The driver and passenger of the Pontiac were uninjured, but the driver was arrested for driving on a suspended license and driving under the influence as an alcohol restricted driver, according to the report.

Three injured in U.S. 191 crash

A woman from Switzerland and two others riding in her vehicle were injured July 14 after she apparently fell asleep at the wheel, crashing into a motorcycle rider and a semi-tractor trailer, according to a report from the Utah Highway Patrol. The women, 27, was traveling north on U.S. 191 at mile 146 at about 11 a.m. when the crash occurred in a construction zone where traffic was restricted to one lane of travel at a time, according to the report. The motorcycle and the semi were stopped and waiting to be guided through the construction area when the crash occurred, UHP officials said. The motorcycle rider and semi driver escaped injury. The woman and two other occupants of the Jeep were transported by ambulance to Allen Memorial Hospital. The road was closed to intermittent traffic for about 1.5 hours, according to the report.

Colorado men arrested for drug possession

Three Colorado men were arrested July 13 after a Utah Highway Patrol trooper found methamphetamine, marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms in their vehicle during a routine traffic stop. The UHP trooper stopped the Mazda Millenia for traveling 95 mph in a 65 mph zone near mile 147 on U.S. 191, according to a report from the Utah Highway Patrol. The trooper suspected drugs were in the car and investigated, the report states. The driver, 27, from Denver, was arrested for DUI metabolite and possession of a controlled substance. The two occupants, ages 25 and 28, also from Denver, were arrested for possession of a controlled substance. The men were booked into Grand County jail on felony charges, UHP officials said.

Two arrested for DUI, intoxication

Two women from Connecticut were arrested July 15 after a passerby reported seeing two women slumped over in a vehicle at the intersection of U.S. 191 and state Route 128.

A police officer who investigated reported finding the vehicle with its lights on and the engine running and seeing two women apparently asleep inside the car. The officer knocked on the window but was unable to awaken the women, according to a report from the Moab City Police Department. He eventually woke the passenger, 21, and the driver, 26, and asked them to step out of the car, according to the report.

The officer reported that the driver’s breath smelled of alcohol, and other evidence at the scene indicated that the two women were intoxicated. The driver failed field sobriety tests, according to the report, and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The passenger appeared to be too intoxicated to safely find her way back to the campsite where they both were staying, according to the report. She was arrested for intoxication. Both women were booked into Grand County jail.

Man assaulted on Williams Way

Police were called to Allen Memorial Hospital on July 11 after a Moab man seeking medical treatment reported that he had been assaulted several hours earlier.

The man, 30, told police he was beaten unconscious by three men as he rode his bicycle home on Williams Way after leaving a local bar, according to a report from the Moab City Police Department. The man said he woke up on the roadside a couple of hours later and went home, but decided after some time that he needed to go to the hospital for treatment.

The man could not identify the men who attacked him, according to the report.
