A man accused of paying a 13-year-old girl to have sex with him pleaded innocent to all charges in Moab’s 7th District Court on Tuesday.
Bradley H. Schlueter, 50, is charged with rape of a child, a first-degree felony, dealing in harmful material to a minor, a third-degree felony, and one misdemeanor count of patronizing a prostitute.
Authorities allege that Schlueter showed the girl a pornographic film, had sexual intercourse with her at his home, then gave her money.
During a preliminary hearing, the girl, now 14, described going to Schlueter’s home on two occasions in April. On one of those evenings, the girl testified, Schlueter showed her a pornographic movie.
She said as they watched television, Schlueter began kissing her, and eventually took her to his bedroom where he told her to remove her skirt. She said they did not engage in sex at that time. During the second encounter a week or two later, they had sex, the girl said. She testified that Schlueter handed her $20 after the first encounter, and gave her $100 after they had sex.
“He asked if I wanted a job doing that... Having sex for money,” the girl said in describing the second alleged incident. She said she declined the offer.
Under questioning by defense attorney Aric Cramer, the girl admitted that she “did not tell the full truth” when she was first interviewed by law enforcement in late April.
Judge Lyle Anderson ordered that Schlueter be bound over for trial. A trial date was not set.
A motion hearing to decide whether the court will exclude certain evidence in the trial is set for Oct. 18.
