The Grand County High School girls and boys basketball teams both lost to San Juan last week to end their respective regular seasons. Both Red Devil teams will head to Cedar City this week to play qualifying play-in games for the 2A state tournament. The tournament is scheduled to take place next week (Feb. 25-27) at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

Last Thursday, Feb. 11, the Lady Devils hosted the Lady Broncos. Both teams started out slowly, with Grand holding a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. By halftime, the Lady Devils were up by seven, 17-10, but San Juan came back in the third quarter and took the lead with about seven minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Devils narrowed the deficit to three and had the ball with a minute to play, but another turnover and subsequent free throws by San Juan put the game away by a final score of 45-38.

Shelby Dalton scored 18 points to lead the Lady Devils, who were plagued by foul trouble for much of the second half.

San Juan made 15-of-25 free throws during the game (60 percent), while Grand made only four out of 10.

The following night, the Red Devil boys traveled to Blanding to face the Broncos, to whom they’d lost at Moab on Jan. 20. Once again, the Red Devils stayed close in the first half, only to let things slip away in the second half.

San Juan had four players score in double figures as the Broncos rolled to an 81-50 victory.

Grand’s Austin Clark led the Red Devils with 20 points in that game, while Preston Walston added nine.

On Friday, Feb. 19, the Lady Devils (now 7-11 overall) will face South Summit (15-6) at 8 p.m. at Southern Utah University in Cedar City. Grand is the No. 4 seed from Region 15, while the Lady Wildcats are seeded as the No. 2 team from Region 14.

Then, on Saturday, Feb. 20, the Grand boys (3-14) will play their play-in game against Enterprise (17-3) at 6:30 p.m., also at SUU. Grand is the No. 5 seed from Region 15, while Enterprise is the No. 1 seed from Region 13.
