Roadblock nets numerous arrests

Several motorists were cited or landed in jail Nov. 13 as the Utah Highway Patrol, assisted by the Grand County Sheriff’s Department, conducted a roadblock on I-70 east of Crescent Junction.

A 41-year-old West Valley, Utah man was arrested for driving under the influence after he was stopped during the roadblock at about 4 p.m. An open container of beer was found in the man’s vehicle, and he refused to submit to a portable alcohol detection test and failed several field sobriety tests, according to a report from the sheriff’s department.

He was transported to Grand County Jail where he was booked for DUI.

At about 10 a.m., two California men were arrested for marijuana possession with intent to distribute, according to a sheriff’s department report. The men, ages 48 and 39, were stopped during the roadblock and a search of their vehicle turned up about one pound of marijuana. They were booked into Grand County Jail.

A 28-year-old Phoenix man, a 34-year-old California man and a 51-year-old manfrom Grand Junction, Colo. were also charged with possession of marijuana as a result of the roadblock.

The Arizona man was driving an SUV filled with “illegal immigrants,” according to the sheriff’s department report. The deputy who made the stop smelled marijuana and a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a small bag of leafy substance believed to be marijuana. He was cited and released.

Upon questioning by law enforcement, the man from Fairfield, Calif. handed over a small container of what was believed to be marijuana and a pipe, according to the report. He was issued a citation and allowed to continue to Denver, according to the report.

The Grand Junction resident initially denied possessing marijuana then produced a document stating he was allowed the drug for medical purposes. He was informed that medical marijuana is not legal in Utah. The man handed over a small container of what was believed to be marijuana and a glass pipe, according to the sheriff’s report. He was issued a citation and released.

Bicycle stolen on west side

A bicycle was reported stolen from Palisade Dr. on Oct. 27. The red Kona Dawg bike was valued at $900.

Police are searching for leads in the case, according to a report by the Moab City Police Department.



Man arrested for DUI after I-70 crash

An Illinois man traveling to Las Vegas was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after he lost control of the 1996 Ford Explorer he was driving and the vehicle rolled several times, coming to rest in the median of I-70 at about mile 187. The accident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Nov. 12.

The man, 48, was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital by ambulance, then to St. Mary’s Hospital by helicopter for treatment, according to a report from the Utah Highway Patrol. He was cited for DUI, driving with a suspended license, and failure to stay in lane of travel.
