Man arrested after bar refuses service

A Moab man was arrested Sept. 12 after a police officer observed him staggering along the sidewalk outside a local bar. The bar owner told Moab City Police officers that the man had tried to enter the bar and was turned away because he appeared to be extremely intoxicated. An officer stopped the man, who was carrying a six-pack of beer, and he gave police a false name and date of birth, according to a report from the Moab City Police Department. The man eventually provided police with his name and birth date. He was taken into custody for public intoxication and booked into Grand County Jail.

Three bikes stolen over two days

A bicycle valued at $3,200 was reported stolen from the Grand County High School Technology Center on Sept. 16. Police investigating reported that the Santa Cruz Bullitt mountain bike was unlocked at the time of the theft.

The same day, a resident of Williams Way contacted police to report that a green bicycle was stolen from the front yard of his home.

Two days earlier, a visitor from Maryland reported the theft of his bicycle from a local motel. In that case, the man said the bicycle was locked in a bike rack outside but disappeared sometime in the night. The Yeti 575 mountain bike is valued at $4,500, according to a police report

Police are searching for leads in both cases.

Bank, construction site hit with graffiti

A local bank contacted Moab City Police on Sept. 14 to report that graffiti was painted on the side of the building sometime over the weekend, according to a report from the Moab City Police Department.

The same morning, a manager with Hogan Construction Co. reported that graffiti was spray-painted on the inside of walls at the construction site of the new Helen M. Knight Intermediate School/Red Rock Elementary School on 400 North. He said the vandalism also occurred over the weekend, according to a police report.

Money stolen from local church

The pastor of a local church contacted police Sept. 14 to report the theft of about $47 from the church office and the “Glory Grind” church coffee fund, according to a report from the Moab City Police Department.

The pastor told police that a man had shown up at the church the previous day while the pastor was out of town. The man contacted the pastor by phone with the help of a church employee and the pastor said the man could stay at the church overnight, or until the pastor returned.

When the pastor returned later that night he found the church empty, the office locked and the man gone, according to the report. The next morning, the pastor discovered that a screen had been removed from a window in the church and money was missing.

Police have been unable to locate the man, according to the report.

Guns stolen from storage unit

The Grand County Sheriff’s office is investigating the theft of several firearms, mostly hunting rifles, from a storage facility in Spanish Valley.

Deputies were called to the scene on Sept. 16 after the individual who rents the storage unit reported that several guns were missing. She told police the firearms had been inside the unit earlier in the day and her son had seen them there. She also said a key to the unit that was kept at a nearby gas station had been missing for several days.

Man arrested for DUI

A Moab man landed in jail Sept. 17 after a Grand County Sheriff’s deputy saw a pickup truck run a stop sign at Spanish Trail and Spanish Valley Drive. The truck then pulled over and the passenger got out and took over the wheel, according to a report from the Grand County Sheriff’s Department.

The deputy told both men that he had seen them switch places. The passenger admitted drinking, and the deputy reported smelling alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver, 43, was arrested and booked into Grand County Jail on charges of driving under the influence. The passenger was not cited, according to the report.
