“We really want people to give us their pick for the People’s Choice award,” said Executive Director Michael Ford Dunton. The $1,000 cash award will go to the most popular piece of art that was submitted in 2017. Go online to moabarttrails.org before Aug. 31 to submit your choice.
Last year’s selection committee will gather Aug. 31 to discuss and decide which of the 10 2017 pieces would be purchased. The winner of the People’s Choice award would have a leg up on that decision, he said, making it more important to participate.
This year, artists who applied will find out if they made the cut, as notifications are sent out between Sept. 2 and 9, with the installation and reception scheduled for Oct. 13.
According to a report from Moab ArTTrails, each artist will receive a $500 honorarium. They will be provided lodging downtown for the October event or stay at the home of a local patron of the arts.
Here’s what they have to do to earn the invitation: Create an original piece of art that is for sale; sculptures must be at least four feet in height and no more than six feet in height or depth and mounted to a steel base.
Quality, durability, safety and fit are key parameters of the selection process. That is to say, they must demonstrate artistic excellence in conception, composition and execution, according to the contest rules, and “must be able to withstand the forces of the high desert and vandalism” with a minimum of maintenance. Since all selected pieces will be considered to become part of the permanent collection, they must be aesthetically relevant to the surroundings.
