The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Canyon Country District is initiating planning for the March 2018 competitive oil and gas lease sale and seeking public comments on proposed parcels. The BLM will use the comments in preparing an environmental assessment that analyzes potential impacts associated with leasing, agency officials said in a news release.

“The BLM encourages comments that identify specific issues or concerns, which can be used to help frame the analysis, develop additional resource protection measures, and contribute to a well-reasoned decision,” BLM officials said.

Forty-five parcels totaling 57,074 acres have been nominated by industry for consideration. Twenty-five parcels, approximately 37,095 acres, are in the Monticello Field Office area and 20 parcels, approximately 19,979 acres, are located in the Moab Field Office area. Two parcels span the field office boundaries.

The proposed parcel list and maps are available for review online at BLM’s ePlanning website: https://go.usa.gov/xNfAT and at the Monticello Field Office, 365 N. Main St., and the Moab Field Office, 82 E. Dogwood Ave.

Written comments will be accepted through July 27. Comments may be submitted online, by email to: BLM_UT_MB_Comments@blm.gov, or by mail to: BLM Moab Field Office, 82 E. Dogwood Ave., Moab, UT 84532. Reference “Canyon Country District March 2018 Oil and Gas Lease Sale” in the subject line.

People who have an interest or concerns related to cultural resources may also participate in the proposed project’s National Historic Preservation Act process (information is available at: www.achp.gov/docs/citizens-guide-2015.pdf.) Those who wish to participate should submit requests to the BLM Monticello Field Office explaining their interest in the project and/or concerns with potential effects related to historic properties from the project.
