Berquist had left Red Cliffs Lodge at about 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, with plans to hike an area described as between mile markers 31 to 33 on state Route 128, authorities said. He was reported missing after he failed to return to the lodge later on Thursday.
His vehicle was found in the parking area of Fisher Towers Thursday night.
Classic Lifeguard Helicopter and a helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety helped with the search, Grand County Sheriff’s Lt. Kim Neal said. Searchers found Berquist’s body after following “shoe tracks and discarded water bottles” to his location, according to the news release.
The DPS helicopter assisted in the recovery of the body and he was flown to the Emergency Operations Center in Moab and later transported to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office in Salt Lake City for autopsy. The cause of death was not immediately known, Neal said in the news release.
