The running club for girls at Helen M. Knight Elementary School and the Moab Charter School is sponsored by the BEACON Afterschool Program, and includes lessons geared toward improving the mental and physical health of the students, said Sarah Hinck, an AmeriCorps Vista outreach coordinator for BEACON.
“The girls began their training in mid-February and all the girls reached their goal of completing the 5K,” Hinck said in a news release.
While the Grand Junction 5K was about finishing, not winning, Hinck noted that Hirt had set a goal of beating her time from the previous year and “went well beyond that.”
“Another notable student was Julia Crane, who participated in GOTR all four years she was eligible. What a commitment!” Hinck said.
Maggie Groene, a third-grader from the Moab Charter School said, “GOTR is a good opportunity to meet new friends and run.”
And third-grade home-school student Bella Welch commented, “I wasn’t into running that much and then after I did GOTR I learned to love it. I had fun seeing if I could beat my time until I had an injury. Then I got to cheer on everybody else! I would like to do GOTR next year and then my sister will be old enough to do it too!”
“A big thanks to the coaches, running buddies, BEACON, parents and guardians for all your support and a fabulous season,” Hinck said. “As the girls said at the end of each practice, ‘Girls on the Run is so much fun!’”
