The Red Devils played their final matches on Wednesday, April 23 against the Delta Rabbits. All three of Grand’s singles players won their matches against Delta during the contest.
GCHS junior Elijah Stock continued his strong record for the 2014 season with another two-set win, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Stock’s victory makes him the No. 2 seed in his category heading into the division competition this week.
Junior Alec Tatton, the Red Devils’ No. 2 singles player, also claimed a win in two sets, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Tommie DeWitt, playing in the No. 3 singles spot, handily won his match with consecutive set scores of 6-0.
“Tommie was really on his game,” said GCHS head coach Ed DeFrancia.
The Red Devils’ doubles teams fared worse in their matches against tough competition. Both teams fought for the win but ultimately lost their contests.
No. 1 doubles team Mack Sherrill and Josh Lawley came close to winning their first set, but the Rabbits broke their serve and won the set 7-5. The second set was a 6-3 loss.
No. 2 doubles team Dallin Porter and Derek Johnson started out slow in their match and couldn’t gain enough momentum to stay off the loss. The Rabbits took the first set 6-0 as Grand’s team fought to swing the match their way. Porter and Johnson lost their second set 7-5, to lose the match.
Grand was scheduled to play Uintah in a non-region home contest on Saturday, April 26, but the matches were canceled partway through gameplay due to rainy weather conditions.
Stock managed to win his match before the rain set in, with set scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Sherrill and Lawley lost their match 6-0, 6-1, against Uintah’s top players.
“The boys lost, but they played really well,” DeFrancia said. “There were some incredible points and they were in it the whole time.”
The rest of Grand’s Saturday matches were not completed.
This week, the Red Devils were scheduled to play South Sevier on Monday, April 28 – a match that was rescheduled from April 22 due to bad weather.
Grand will host the Region 15 southern division competition beginning on Thursday May 1 at 4 p.m. Those matches will continue on Friday, May 2, with play starting at 8:30 a.m. and continuing throughout the day.
