The Red Devils had mixed results last week in region games against the South Sevier Rams and North Sevier Wolves.
On Friday, Feb. 14, Grand lost to the Rams 50-45. The Red Devils got off to a slow start against South Sevier, said GCHS head coach Brook Shumway. In the first quarter, Grand was down by eight points and by the end of the first half, the Rams still held a nine-point lead.
But the Red Devils picked up their pace in the second half of the contest, closing the scoring gap and making the Rams work to hold onto their lead. In the last minutes of the game the Red Devils put up a tough fight for the lead but ultimately fell short at the final buzzer.
“We started playing better and kept the game close, but we had some costly turnovers in the end,” said coach Shumway.
Seniors Adam Jenkinson and Kaden Risenhoover scored the most points for the Red Devils during the course of the contest, putting 11 and 12 points on the board, respectively.
On Saturday, Feb. 15, the Red Devils fared better against North Sevier. Though Grand was down by one point at the end of the first quarter and three points by the end of the first half, the Red Devils managed to pull into the lead in the third quarter by outscoring the Wolves by 10 points.
Grand continued to hold the lead against North Sevier as the game headed into the final quarter. By playing strong defense, the Red Devils held on to the lead for the rest of the contest and defeated the Wolves by the score of 64-57.
“We got the defense going and had some good turnovers in the fourth quarter,” coach Shumway said. “We got the upper hand.”
Both Jenkinson and Risenhoover scored 16 points for Grand during the game against North Sevier. Fellow senior Trevor Bertuzzi scored 10 points for the Red Devils.
Grand’s final region game of the season was scheduled to be played on their home court against the Emery Spartans on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The results of that contest will determine where the Red Devils are seeded coming into the state qualifying tournament against seven other teams in Orem on Saturday, Feb 22. The Red Devils are guaranteed a spot in the qualifying tournament regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s game.
The Red Devils will perform a coin toss with either Emery High or South Sevier to determine their placing in Region 15 and the seeding for Saturday’s qualifying tournament. The top eight teams in the state will qualify for the state tournament, which will be held Thursday, Feb. 27 through Saturday, March 1.
