Wasatch Transportation subsidiary Elevated Transit plans to offer once-daily service in both directions, with additional stops in Monticello, Green River, Price, Helper, Spanish Fork and other locations, company CEO Steven Fuller said Feb. 19.
No firm ticket prices have been set at this point, but Fuller said they will be reasonable.
According to Fuller, the company will operate two 35-passenger coaches that come equipped with Wi-Fi Internet service, televisions, lavatories and – perhaps most importantly – comfortable seating.
“We spent a lot of money getting the right seats,” he said.
Both vehicles will also be equipped to accommodate disabled passengers, as required by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Those requirements turned out to be an obstacle to earlier plans for passenger bus service through the area, according to a company that hoped to offer twice-daily runs between southeastern Utah and the Wasatch Front.
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) previously awarded a federally funded contract for regional service to Idaho-based Salt Lake Express.
But that company’s plans fell through shortly after its representatives learned that they could not access a $1.5 million federal grant until they brought their buses into compliance with the ADA.
The latest grant is for a little over $4 million, and ultimately aims to improve passengers’ access to various transit systems along the route, according to regional UDOT spokesman Kevin Kitchen.
“One of the real goals here is to be able to tie into other transit systems,” Kitchen said Feb. 19.
Both of Elevated Transit’s new buses – along with a third backup vehicle – are currently on order.
Fuller anticipates that the company will host an “open bus” event at some point after the vehicles arrive in Utah, giving residents the chance to look over one of them.
Arrival and departure times will also be announced at a later date, he said.
