This year, more than 100 skaters from across the Southwest will participate in the event.
“I first attended Moab Mayhem last year and I was blown away by how well the event was organized,” said Melanie Pfister, a member of Wasatch Roller Derby and recent addition to Team USA. “It is by far the best Utah roller derby event and I think that is one of the reasons it is so well attended. Moab Roller Derby makes it very easy to roll into town and just skate.”
Roller derby games or “bouts” will be featured both days. Beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, short 45-minute challenge bouts will be held throughout the day, culminating in a special full-length bout featuring Utah vs. Colorado, which is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, bouts will begin at 10 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. The mayhem will finish up Sunday afternoon with an all-team scrimmage at 4:30 p.m.
According to officials with Moab Roller Derby, the 2014 Moab Winter Mayhem 3 will also include more vendors and food and beverage offerings at the arena.
Flat track roller derby, a fast-paced full contact sport that requires speed, strategy and athleticism, is one of the fastest growing sports in America. The flat track style of play evolved in 2001 and has grown quickly with more than 820 leagues across the United States, according to the news release.
“With its blend of athleticism, style and, well, quirkiness roller derby is a perfect fit for Moab,” said John Geiger, director of the Moab City Recreation Department. “The tremendous success of the Midwinter Mayhem bears this out with over 800 people in attendance in 2013. I’m sure it’ll be even bigger this year as more and more folks find out what a blast it is to watch these ladies do their thing.”
Tickets to the event are $10 for spectators. Kids age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge.
