The Red Devils’ two team wins came against Juan Diego and Springville on Friday evening. Grand beat Juan Diego by a score of 45-18 and then defeated Springville 51-24. Earlier, in their first match of the evening, the Red Devils lost to American Fork by a score of 66-15.
After the loss to American Fork, the Red Devils played in Pool C, taking on each of the seven teams in that pool in succession over the two-day event. Grand ended up finishing with a 2-5-1 record during the tournament.
On Saturday, the Red Devils lost to Carbon 54-24, to Panguitch 57-13, and to Gunnison 42-28. Grand then tied Summit Academy 42-42, and actually ended up tied with Summit Academy for fifth place among the eight teams in the pool. The Red Devils’ final match was a 51-21 loss to Pine View.
It was during that last match against Pine View that Francis faced his toughest test, as he was pitted against Jaden Peterson, the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the 3A classification. The match went the full three rounds, with Francis eking out a narrow 4-2 victory.
“Jacob’s shoulder actually popped out again during that match,” said GCHS head coach Dennis Wells, who nevertheless doesn’t expect Francis to miss any action as a result of the injury.
Other Grand wrestlers who did well at the Juab tournament included 120-pound senior Gage Lindquist, who went 7-1, 126-pound junior Andrew Hugentobler, who went 5-1, and 132-pound junior Robert Allred, who went 6-2.
Earlier in the week, Grand also hosted Monticello in a dual meet on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The Buckaroos won the match handily, outscoring Grand 52-12.
“Monticello really tore it up against us,” Wells said. “The only points we got were by two forfeits.”
Monticello had open roster spots at 138 pounds and at heavyweight, meaning both Francis and Gomez won without having to actually wrestle.
This week, the Red Devils are scheduled to face the San Juan Broncos in a dual meet scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. The team’s three senior athletes – Francis, Gomez, and Lindquist – are scheduled to be honored at that match during senior recognition night. Grand’s next event after that will be the 2A Duels meet in Richfield on Jan. 3 and 4.
