The Grand County High School volleyball team won its first game at the state 2A tournament in Orem on Friday, Nov. 1, defeating Waterford 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12). The Lady Devils lost the first set before winning the next three and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Unfortunately, Grand’s hopes for a volleyball championship were dashed in the quarterfinals, where the Lady Devils met up with eventual state champion Enterprise.

Top-ranked Enterprise, which had dominated Region 13 with an undefeated 8-0 region record, swept the Lady Devils in three sets, 25-14, 25-12, and 25-17. Enterprise ended up winning all four of its tournament matches in straight sets as the Lady Wolves cruised to the state title.

Last year, Enterprise narrowly lost in the championship game to Richfield by the score of 3-2. This time around, the Lady Wolves were untouchable, winning all 12 sets over four matches as they defeated, in order, American Leadership Academy, Grand, South Summit, and San Juan.

Friday evening’s loss dropped the Lady Devils into the consolation bracket on Saturday morning, when Grand faced Region 15 foe Emery. Grand and Emery had split their season series, with each team beating the other on the road. At the tournament, Emery jumped out to a commanding 2-0 lead, winning the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-17. Grand came back to win the third set, 25-21, but faltered in the fourth as Emery outscored the Lady Devils 25-22, thereby ending Grand’s postseason. The Lady Devils finished with a 6-4 regular season record, taking third place in Region 15.

GCHS senior Jessica Valdes was named to the prestigious Academic All-State volleyball team, joining nine other student athletes on the 2A squad. In addition, Valdes and fellow GCHS senior Shailee Croasmun were named to an all-star team that will compete in the 1A/2A all-star game in Panguitch this weekend.
