The Grand County High School volleyball team lost a region match at San Juan High School in Blanding on Tuesday, Oct. 8, then traveled to Richfield for the Sevier Valley Invitational, where the Lady Devils won six of their eight matches and placed ninth out of 16 teams at the tournament.

In the Oct. 8 match against San Juan, the Lady Devils lost in straight sets, 25-16, 25-19, and 25-22. “We just couldn’t get it going at Blanding,” said GCHS head coach Deb Hren. Sophomore Sydney Lema led Grand with nine kills.

At the Richfield tournament, the Lady Devils lost to both Beaver and Piute on Friday, Oct. 11, but managed to defeat Richfield. All of the matches, which were best-of-three, were won by a 2-0 score.

Then, on Saturday, the Lady Devils won all five of their matches in straight sets, defeating Millard, Pine View, and Richfield, along with Kanab twice, to take first place among the lower eight teams in the tournament.

Grand played without the services of star senior Tiffanie Whipple, who missed the Richfield tournament due to a back injury. Also, this week, junior Lexi Risenhoover is out with a hip injury. It’s unclear when either player will be able to return to action, Hren said, although Whipple did practice with the team on Monday.

This week, the Lady Devils have just one match scheduled, a contest at Region 15 rival Emery High on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Grand enters the match with a 3-4 record in region play, and is currently in fourth place among the six teams in the region, with three region games left.

Grand’s final two contests of the regular season will both be at home next week. The Lady Devils will host North Sevier at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, then they will play South Sevier at 3:30 p.m. the following afternoon, on Saturday, Oct. 26.
