The Grand County High School mountain biking team took home the second-place team trophy after a strong finish at the season-opening race held at Corner Canyon in Draper on Saturday, Sept. 14.

GCHS sophomore Sammy Hansen placed first among 68 sophomore boys, while freshman Bjorn Nicolaisen took third place in his category, which had 52 entrants. Grand’s Preston Bagley-Gurtner, a sophomore, placed third among the 96 riders in the junior varsity classification.

With a small team of seven athletes, Grand competed in the Division 2 class, said GCHS coach Christa Green. The 11-mile race took place over rocky, muddy terrain “in between storms,” Green said.

Also for Grand, sophomore Jamie Marshall placed 21st among the junior varsity boys competitors and sophomore River Murdock placed 26th among sophomore boys.

Grand’s two female athletes also did well, Green said. GCHS junior Robin Willscheidt finished the race in 21st place among junior varsity girls and sophomore Brityn Ballard placing 18th among the sophomore girls.

“Since this is a co-ed sport, we earned our team points based on the top three boys and the top girl point-earners,” said Melissa Nerone, who also coaches mountain biking for GCHS. “We were so stoked to win the second place team trophy!”

There are four remaining events in the Utah High School Cycling League series. The Round Valley Round Up at Park City is scheduled to take place Sept. 28, the Snowbasin event in Ogden is set for Oct. 12, a race at Soldier Hollow is scheduled to be held in Midway on Oct. 26 and the final event of the season is set to be held in Moab on Nov. 9.
