A 78-year-old man from Japan died Thursday evening, June 27, from injuries he received in a fall in Arches National Park.
Tsuneo Ohashi, from Saitama, Japan, was hiking in the park at 7:41 p.m., when he fell approximately 60 feet into the sandstone bowl area below Delicate Arch, officials with the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Ohashi was apparently traveling alone in the Moab area when the accident occurred. Sheriff’s officials said other Japanese-speaking tourists who were in the area were able to provide help with language interpretation for Ohashi and rescue personnel.
Grand County Search and Rescue workers responded to the emergency call and a Careflight helicopter from St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., was dispatched to the scene.
Ohashi was transported to Moab Regional Hospital, but died as a result of injuries from the fall, according to the news release from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.
