Karen Green’s two decades of volunteer work helping the Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo thrive are being repaid this year with her selection as Grand Marshal for the May 30-June 1 event at the Old Spanish Trail Arena.

“She’s been involved with the rodeo for several years so it is an honor that is greatly deserved,” said Marsha Leota, Canyonlands Rodeo Club secretary.

Green will ride in the Saturday morning parade on June 1 and will appear in the rodeo’s “Grand Entry” at 7:30 p.m. each evening of the event.

“I’m honored,” Green said. “It makes me feel good.”

She follows in the tradition of her deceased husband, Verle, who was Grand Marshal in 1998 – three years before the couple married.

Green said she has always had a love of rodeo and the cowboy lifestyle.

“It’s part of our heritage,” she said. “And my husband was a cowboy. He worked in a lot of the western movies around here. He was a friend of Ben Johnson.”

Karen Green, who turned 74 this month, intended to ride a horse for her appearances, but decided to opt for an automobile at the request of her children.

“I told them the horse would be gentle,” she said, “but any horse can get spooked so I went along with them. I haven’t been on a horse in 10 or 15 years.”

She will have a special rooting section during the parade and rodeo Grand Entries. Friends and local family members will be on hand, with one son traveling from Fort Carson and another from Alaska for the special event.

The rodeo doors open each night at 6 p.m. at the arena, 3641 S. U.S. 191. Tickets can be purchased online at, or at City Market, 425 S. Main St.; Moab Information Center, 125 E. Center St.; Big Horn Lodge, 550 S. Main St.; and O’Reilly’s Auto Parts, 1026 S. Main St.
