Grand won both games handily, racking up a combined score of 34-6 over the two contests as the Lady Devils won the first game 19-5 and the second one 15-1.
Senior pitcher Donna Snow picked up both wins on the mound. The Lady Devils’ many hits included home runs by Linda Minor and Brianna Ballard.
The next day, on April 6, the Lady Devils traveled to Payson, where they participated in a non-region tournament. Grand came close to winning two of its four contests, but ultimately lost all four non-region games that day.
“It was disappointing, but we’re regrouping and getting ready to focus on our region schedule,” said GCHS head softball coach Stephanie Cluff.
The Lady Devils came close to defeating Gunnison at Payson, taking a slim 5-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh and final inning. But the Lady Bulldogs won 7-5, thanks to a dramatic three-run home run by Morgan Overly to end the game.
Grand had 10 hits during the Gunnison contest, including a homer by Ballard and a double by Amanda Sheets. Snow took the pitching loss.
Grand also suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the Uintah Utes, losing that game 9-8. Also at Payson, Grand lost to the Lehi Pioneers 11-1, and to the Pine View Panthers 7-3.
This week, the Lady Devils (now 2-2 in Region 15 play) are scheduled to travel to Richfield for a region varsity doubleheader on Friday, April 12.
