The Grand County High Lady Devils softball team lost its first region contest of the season last week, falling to the San Juan Lady Broncos by the score of 8-7.

In the game, played March 19 at Moab, Grand opened up a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Devils then scored twice more in the third inning and once in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead midway through the contest.

But San Juan tied the game up by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Justin Hutchins knocked a home run over the fence to cap off the rally for the Lady Broncos.

At that point, the Lady Devils seemed to lose some of their intensity along with the momentum of the game.

“We just got down on ourselves,” said GCHS junior Teaven Fredericks. “We had the mindset that we had already won the game before it was over, and they ended up coming back. We lost our intensity in the box and started hitting pop ups.”

San Juan scored three more runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead, but Grand responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within one run, 8-7.

That ended up being the final score, however, as neither team was able to add another run in the seventh and final inning.

Senior pitcher Donna Snow took the loss on the mound for Grand, while San Juan’s Tatianna Sue Sue picked up the win.

The Lady Devils actually out-batted San Juan eight hits to seven, the exact reverse of the final score. Senior Brianna Ballard hit a home run and a double to lead the Lady Devils, and freshman Madi Jones also added a double.

The loss dropped the Lady Devils’ record to 4-5 overall, 0-1 in region play. The Lady Broncos improved to 5-1 overall, 3-0 in region.

Grand’s next scheduled game is a region contest at Emery High School in Castle Dale on Tuesday, April 2.
