GCMS varsity and JV teams earn Quiz Bowl wins at Price

  The Grand County Middle School and Grand County High School teams competed in their first Quiz Bowl tournament of the season last Thursday, March 7, at Price. The GCMS team won both the varsity and junior varsity divisions, thereby qualifying for nationals, according to GCMS coach Mike Estenson.

  The GCMS varsity team, consisting of captain Jayelen Knowles and teammates Tobin Wainer, Grace Osusky, Tyler Moreau, and Aidan Guzman-Newton, went 4-1 during the tournament. Their only loss came against Mont Harmon in the first final game. Since it was the Thunderbirds’ first loss in the double-elimination tournament, the two teams faced each other again, with Grand Middle winning the rematch and taking home the first-place trophy.

  In the junior varsity division, the middle school team went 4-0 en route to the championship. JV team members for GCMS were captain Bjorn Nicoliesen, Deklynd Chant, Taylor Brewer, Aushea Lore and Payton Webb.

  Interestingly, both GCMS teams played to a tie on one of the rounds, and received the same tiebreaker question in their respective games (the varsity and JV brackets used the same sets of questions, as the tournaments were held in different rooms).

  “The sudden death question asked which of the original 13 colonies was most susceptible to British invasion because of its geographical isolation and low population. Tobin Wainer for varsity and Taylor Brewer for JV both got the correct answer, which was Georgia,” Estenson said.

  A team of freshmen from Grand County High School also participated at last week’s tournament, but the GCHS ninth-graders were beaten by their younger counterparts from GCMS in both brackets. Competing for GCHS were Cody Jones, Sammy Hansen, Annie Heywood, River Murdock, Austin Aubry, Josh LaRance and Vance Petitti.

  This week, on Thursday, March 14, Grand’s middle and high school teams will host a Quiz Bowl event at Grand County High School. The tournament is set to begin at 10 a.m. in the GCHS auditorium and band room.
