Grand had just two upperclassmen make the trip – seniors Calen Shumway and Wesley Rodda – due to the fact that the school’s junior prom was held in Moab the night of Saturday, March 2, before the soccer team was able to return.
“That meant they were basically junior varsity games for us,” said GCHS head coach Mike Camps.
The Red Devils first played Desert Hills High School, a 3A school in St. George, and lost by a 10-0 shutout on Friday, March 1. The following afternoon, Grand lost to Delta High, also a 3A school, by the score of 8-1. Rodda scored Grand’s lone goal of the game.
Camps said he is giving little thought to the preseason losses, and added that he and his players are looking forward to the team’s first region games of the season. The Red Devils were scheduled to host South Sevier on Tuesday, March 5, and Gunnison on Thursday, March 7.
