Missing Colorado man, 81, found dead in eastern Grand County

A Colorado man who had been reported missing was found dead Feb. 25 in Grand County. The body of Lou Schneider, 81, of Grand Junction, was discovered approximately 11.3 miles west of the Colorado border by Grand County residents who were traveling in the area, according to information from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

The people had crossed the Dolores River upstream from the Dewey Bridge site and were driving in an area called the Dolores Triangle when they spotted a car that had apparently become stuck along the side of the road. They discovered Schneider’s body at approximately 4 p.m., less than a mile farther down the road, said Lt. Kim Neal.

Neal said investigators believe Schneider collapsed after walking away from his vehicle to seek help after the car accident. Schneider had walked approximately seven-tenths of a mile before collapsing, Neal said.

Grand County deputies had to travel through the Colorado National Monument near Fruita and then through the Glade Park area to reach the site where Schneider was found, Neal said.

Schneider had been reported missing by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department in Grand Junction, on Feb. 23. He had last been seen at the Golden Corral restaurant in Grand Junction. According to the missing person alert from Mesa County, Schneider had a history of illnesses that included stroke and high blood pressure, Neal said.

Schneider’s body was transported to the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
