Of course, the psychos who would shoot up a school or a movie theater or a fire truck will always find a way to do their incomprehensible deeds, whether it be by gun, bomb, or hijacked jet.
That makes the whole thing a societal problem, not just a gun problem. All of society will need to pony up to protect our citizens, not just those of us who own and use firearms judiciously and responsibly.
I would suggest that if special excise taxes are the answer, then let us all be taxed on everything we all use: cars, fuel, food, liquor, hardware, etc. Or perhaps there could be donation options on our state and federal tax forms to allow us all to help pay the bill.
In these ways, thoughtful and caring people like Patrick T. McGann, who do not use guns or buy ammo, can also help pay to defend our schools, instead of heaping it all on those of us who are just as thoughtful and caring, but have hobbies different from his.
