The Grand County High School Red Devil wrestling team won four of 10 matches at the 2A Duals meet held in Richfield last weekend.
According to assistant GCHS coach Ron Dolphin, the Red Devils competed against 10 other 2A schools during the two-day event Jan. 4 and 5, wrestling five matches each day.
Grand’s four victories were a 36-30 win over North Summit, a 36-22 win over Kanab, a 42-30 victory over San Juan, and a 42-30 win over Parowan.
The Red Devils also recorded a 42-42 tie against Emery, but the Spartans were deemed the winners of the match due to a tiebreaker, coach Dolphin said.
Grand’s five losses came as follows: a 42-33 loss to Gunnison, a 72-12 loss to Millard, a 54-24 loss to South Sevier, a 48-30 loss to Richfield, and a 60-18 loss to South Summit.
Among the outstanding individual performances for Grand was that of heavyweight Edgar Gomez, who won all 10 of his matches. In addition, Gage Lindquist, wrestling at 120 pounds, went 9-1 over the two days. Fellow Red Devil Dexter Sheets, wrestling at 126 pounds, also went 9-1. Sheets’ only loss was against Millard.
In the 152-pound weight category, senior Trenton White of Grand won his first two matches but suffered a back injury during the third match, against Millard. White not only lost that match but he was unable to compete for the remainder of the event, according to the coach.
Also for Grand, Seth Holyoak won five of his matches and Robert Allred won four. Austin Day won three matches and David Bentley and Matt Bridenbaker each won two.
Also competing for Grand at the meet were Justin Moore and Andrew Hugentobler.
