Louis Williams made a current proposal to rename Negro Bill Canyon located on SR 128 near Moab, Utah. I am writing to express support of changing the name of Negro Bill Canyon to, instead, “Grandstaff Canyon.”
Louis’ extensive historical research revealed Grandstaff did not refer to himself as “Nigger Bill” nor “Negro Bill.” In this case, the USGS should strongly consider rightfully naming the canyon after William Grandstaff, or, if such a name is still highly debated, consider renaming the canyon after one of the multiple unique wilderness qualities present within the canyon’s wilderness study area boundaries.
