GCHS swimmers turn in strong performances at Castle Dale meet

The Grand County High School swim team continues to improve, with several individuals recording personal-best times at a two-school meet held in Castle Dale on Thursday, Dec. 20.

Spanish Fork High School’s team was also scheduled to attend the meet, but the Mighty Dons were unable to make the competition due to transportation issues, said GCHS head coach Brian Pierce. That left Grand and host school Emery High going head-to-head throughout the afternoon and early evening.

GCHS junior Jackson Knowles placed first overall in the 200-yard freestyle with a new personal best time of 2 minutes, 14.75 seconds, Pierce said. He noted that Knowles also took first place in the 100-yard butterfly. With a finishing time of 1:04.64, Knowles shaved off a little more than one second from his previous best time of 1:05.65.

Also for Grand, junior Wiley Sheldon placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:29.25, and junior Treyton Helquist took third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:27.12, improving his time by 6.32 seconds.

Grand also took second place in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay, with Drake Hackney, Helquist, River Murdock, and Knowles improving their team’s previous best time by .28 of a second.

“Murdock swam his leg of the relay in 29.63, a personal best for him,” Pierce said. He added that Murdock also took second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:26.78, recording another new personal best time.

The Red Devil boys team also took second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay, Pierce said.

For the GCHS girls, sophomore Robin Willscheidt finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:32.24. Freshman Kayla Weston placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 33:09, and also took fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:18.18.

GCHS junior Sierra Indergard took fourth place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:32.10, and also placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 33.29. Pierce noted that GCHS freshman Katie Winget improved her time in the 100-yard freestyle, taking 4.11 seconds off her previous best and cutting her time down to 1:38.72.

Also for Grand, junior Gabriel Martineau improved her 50-yard freestyle time by 1.79 seconds, making her new time 39.04.

The Lady Devils also took second place in both the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays, Pierce said.

“It was a great meet,” Pierce said. “The kids stepped it up this week at practice and it paid off for them. This is a challenging sport and takes a lot of dedication and hard work to shave off time in a race.”

Following the school’s winter holiday break, the GCHS swim team will next compete in back-to-back away meets the first week of January. The team travels to Delta on Jan. 4, and to Richfield on Jan. 5.
