The Moab Community Christmas Choir is made up of singers and musicians from Moab churches. The choir is directed by Ryan Morrill, 1st LDS Ward, and Nanci Flesher, St. Pius X Church. Also directing will be Don McGuire, 1st LDS Ward.
The choir was the inspiration of Morrill, who recognized that, since the former years of the Moab Messiah performances, many singers and musicians still wanted the opportunity to participate in a quality, choral concert, according to a news release from the choir organizers. Music performed for the concert will be mostly of a “sacred nature,” according to the news release. The more than 40 choir members are from the Moab Community Church, all five LDS Wards, the Seventh DayAdventist Church, St. Francis Episcopal Church, and St. Pius X Roman Catholic Parish.
Morrill, the former band director for Grand County High School, is the elementary/vocal music teacher at Helen M. Knight Elementary School. McGuire is the new band director for Grand County High School. FIesher, the teacher for the new BEACON Moab Strings Program, is a retired public school, elementary/vocal music and instrumental teacher, and former director of music in a large Catholic parish, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The concert will include performances by a brass ensemble from the Utah State University Canyon Winds, and percussionists from the community. The brass ensemble will play Christmas carols from the balcony prior to the beginning of the concert, according to the news release. The concert will also include traditional English, French, German and Austrian carols, as well as carols from Appalachia, West Africa (Cameroon) and the West Indies. The final portion of the concert will include audience participation in caroling with the choir and instrumentalists.
Following the concert, there will be a holiday reception in the Community Church Fellowship Hall.
