City approves increase to aquatic center fees

Buying a pass for the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center just got a little pricier. The Moab City Council voted unanimously last month to approve a new fee schedule for the facility. The new rates are scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1.

According to Moab City Manager Donna Metzler, the city regularly reviews the fees charged for city-run facilities. Metzler explained that the review and occasional fee adjustments enable the city to keep up with costs and avoid more substantial increases in the future.

“We started out with a very low fee structure [at MRAC],” Metzler said. “We knew it was low, and wanted to start that way. But in order to keep our revenue recovery at about 54 percent, I think it’s important to bump those rates a little bit.”

According to a memo from Moab City Recreation Director John Geiger and MRAC Director Terry Lewis, one of the reasons for the rate increase is the increase in overall expenses. The budgeted expenses for the facility have gone up by 9.5 percent, largely due to increases in salaries and benefits for employees

Metzler explained that the city also hopes the rate increases will encourage residents to buy year-round passes for the facility, rather than the monthly or seasonal passes. Metzler said that, in general, the annual passes are a better value for members of the public.

“It works better for us as well,” she said.

While there is no change in the daily admission rates, many of the passes will see increases between $5 and $20. The family pass for both the aquatic center and the fitness center will experience the biggest price jump, going from $445 each year for a family with up to six member, to $465 a year.

MRAC staff said the increase will amount to 5 percent on all year-round passes and 10 percent on the summer season passes.

“Summer season passes were adjusted by 10 percent as they now cover a period 5 weeks longer than they did in 2011,” according to the memo.

In addition to the rate changes, the new fee schedule will also add a “class punch pass” option for members and non-members.
