The San Juan contest was a region game, and winning that match kept Grand out of last place in the Region 15 standings and gave the Lady Devils a No. 4 seed in this week’s state 2A playoffs. The championship playoffs are scheduled take place Oct. 25 and 26 at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Against the San Juan Lady Broncos, the Lady Devils won the first two games of the match by the respective scores of 25-21 and 25-19. Grand then lost the third game, 25-15, but came back to take the fourth and final game, 25-22.
The following afternoon, the Lady Devils coasted to a relatively easy 3-0 win over the Green River Lady Pirates. The non-region victory did not help Grand’s position in the region standings, but GCHS head coach Deb Hren said that by winning their last two matches, the Lady Devils should have favorable momentum heading into this week’s state tournament.
Grand’s first-round opponent on Thursday, Oct. 25 will be the Gunnison Bulldogs, the No. 1 seed from Region 16. That game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
Although Grand swept the Lady Bulldogs 3-0 in a pre-season tournament match held Aug. 28, Gunnison has since gone on to clinch their region championship with a perfect 10-0 region record.
“If we play like we’re capable of playing, I think we can win at least our first two games at state and make it to the semifinals against Richfield, assuming that they also win their first two games,” Hren said.
“If our main core of players shows up and we play our game, I know we can win,” Hren added.
The double-elimination tournament continues until Friday evening at UVU.
