Balanced Rock seems a lot like our current, much to our mutual benefit, mostly non-partisan form of government. As you walk around the rock it maintains its balance. Erosion is ever working upon it, yet it stands in good light. That good light is to be had on all sides. Sometimes the light is flat. Sometimes the rock is in silhouette (meaning the details are hard to see). Often, it is just plain glorious.
Not all angles are agreeable to my sense of composition. Viewed from many angles I can make a choice about where I stand. I do not always agree with any one voice or decision of our current county government. However, I am VERY comfortable with most of the decisions that are made on our behalf because I know with 7 members representing an ever-diverse population, that most, if not all points of view are heard and considered.
The proposed measure to “study” what basically means returning to a 3-member council might mean for the community is like a 3-legged dog. It just doesn’t run that well. We feel bad for it, and in its frustration it often rises up to bite us in the butt.
Let’s remember, that in 1993 we studied the then 3-member form of government and found it lacking. There is no need to study the difference again. We’ve been there. We’ve done that.
The “Vote Yes” sign reads, “responsible citizens ask questions.” That’s what the current council does. Many questions from many points of view. That is how transparency in government is created.
The current move to create a study seems a thinly veiled smokescreen to put the power in the hands of a few with partisan political agenda. If the initiative had been authored by a non-partisan committee I might have listened. Such is not the case.
Let all voices be heard. Vote “No” to the proposed change in county government.
