Grand’s varsity squad beat Monticello three games to one, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-13. The Lady Buckaroos took only the second of the four games in the match, eeking out a two-point win, 25-23. Grand’s junior varsity and freshmen teams also won their respective matches against Monticello.
Then, on Friday, Oct. 12, the Lady Devils traveled to Monroe, Utah, where they played the South Sevier Lady Rams in a region contest. South Sevier won the hard-fought match in five games, 25-20, 28-26 and 15-12. The Lady Devils won the first and third sets with scores of 25-22 and 25-21, respectively.
“We missed serves at very inopportune times,” said GCHS head coach Deb Hren of the South Sevier game. According to Hren, highlights from the game included Gaby Meyer’s four service aces, Carly Dalton’s eight kills, 12 assist blocks, and four solo blocks, Nikita Nelson’s 10 kills and 19 digs, and Linda Minor’s eight assists.
The following day, the Lady Devils played Richfield, with the Lady Wildcats prevailing in three straight games, 19-25, 16-25, and 19-25.
“When we stuck to the game plan we would hang with them or even lead,” Hren said of the matchup against Richfield. “Richfield struggles to dig line, so when we could hit line and block their No. 3 hitter, we led at times, including 6-3 early on in the second game. We also hung neck-and-neck until late in third.”
Highlights from the Richfield game included 13 digs by Dalton and nine digs apiece by Nikita Nelson and Tiffanie Whipple. Kasey Betts had seven blocks and Meyer added six blocks.
This week, the Lady Devils were scheduled to wrap up their regular season with a home match against the San Juan Lady Broncos on Tuesday, Sept. 16, followed by a non-region game against Green River at Moab on the following day, Wednesday, Sept. 17.
Depending on the outcome of the San Juan match, Grand may also compete in a play-in game for the 2A playoffs against Emery. If the play-in match between Grand and Emery is necessary, it will be played on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at Green River High School, Hren said.
