Council members approved the updated Airport Layout Plan, which is a blueprint for potential growth during the next 30 years. Airport Manager Kelly Braun said it is a tool the Federal Aviation Administration uses to schedule capital improvement financing.
Council members also approved a land lease agreement with Airport Garage Co. so the firm can build a five-unit garage in the long-term parking area at Canyonlands Field.
The structure would allow people to park their vehicles indoors, and some space would be available for airlines to store ramp service equipment out of the elements. The council OK’d a 30-year-lease for the garage.
During Braun’s presentation to the council about the Airport Layout Plan, council member Audrey Graham said it appeared the plans would be expensive.
“Someone has to pay for this and staff it,” she said. “This is a huge expansion of our airport.”
However, Braun said a study must be done before any expansion to make sure the money FAA would spend is justified. He emphasized that no expansion proposals are firm.
“It’s a general overlay of the airport,” he said. “It’s not hard and fast. It just gives a 30-year look at where the airport is going.”
In July, the council approved a grant application seeking $300,000 from the FAA for improvements to the airport entrance road as well as lighting and parking upgrades. Grand County and the Utah Department of Transportation would each contribute about $15,000 if the grant were received.
