Approximately 120 acres, primarily bulrush stands located near the preserve’s south and central ponds, will be burned to reduce the fuel load and eliminate the bulrush infestation. Fire personnel from multiple agencies will be on hand to manage the burn, according to the news release.
The controlled burn and associated breaks are part of a long-term restoration plan developed by preserve managers Linda Whitham (The Nature Conservancy) and Chris Wood (DWR) to “improve wildlife and wetlands habitat” in the Matheson Preserve, the news release stated.
“The [Nature] Conservancy and UDWR apologize for the inconvenience and request that the public comply with this temporary closure,” officials said in the news release.
