Suspected thieves scared away Two young males fled the scene of an attempted break-in of a parked vehicle, after one of the residents of the house arrived home from work on Feb. 15, according to a report from the Moab City Police. The resident and a witness reported seeing “two boys” trying to break into a parked pickup truck when she pulled into the driveway on 400 North at about 1:50 a.m. The woman told police the two males fled west on Park Drive. Investigators found two sets of footprints surrounding the vehicle at the scene, and the same footprints in dirt leading into a nearby orchard. No items were reported missing from the truck. Police patrolled the area but were unable to locate the suspects.
Police investigate report of threats Moab City Police investigated a report of a man sending threatening messages to a woman with whom he formerly worked. According to the Feb. 12 police report, the man had been recently fired from a local motel and was allegedly sending the threats to a 24-year-old woman who still worked at the business. An officer attempted unsuccessfully to reach the man by phone, but assured the woman he would discuss the matter with him, the report states. The investigating officer also recommended that the woman file a protective order with Moab’s 7th District Court.
Brick thrown through car windshield A woman reported that a white vehicle pulled up in front of her home on 200 North on Jan. 29 and someone threw a brick through the windshield of her vehicle, then fled, according to a Moab City Police report. The investigator estimated that the brick caused about $300 in damage to the vehicle. Police are searching for leads in the case.
Man arrested for domestic assault A Moab man was arrested for assault after police were called to mobile home on Williams Way on Feb. 17 on a report of domestic violence. The Moab City Police officer found the man sitting on the steps of the mobile home he shares with his girlfriend. According to the report, the suspect and 32-year-old victim have lived together for several years. The officer reported that the man refused to follow police orders and was placed in handcuffs. According to the report, the officer also believed the man was intoxicated. The woman told police that she and the man argued and a physical altercation ensued because she refused to give him his pickup truck keys because he was intoxicated. The man was booked into Grand County Jail on a charge of simple assault. His blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit, according to the police report.
Man arrested for DUI A Moab man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol on Feb. 20 after a Grand County Sheriff’s Deputy observed the 49-year-old man’s vehicle riding up on the curb along Williams Way then weaving across both traffic lanes. According to a report from the sheriff’s office, a field sobriety test was administered and the man “failed miserably.” The deputy was also notified that man was wanted on an outstanding warrant. He was booked into the Grand County Jail on suspicion of DUI and the outstanding warrant.
Car crash damages bridge near Cisco A man was injured after his vehicle crashed into a bridge abutment about two miles north of Cisco last weekend. The older-model Oldsmobile Delta 88 driven by the man was a total loss, and damage to the bridge is estimated at about $5,000, officials with the Grand County Sheriff’s office said. Investigators are working to officially determine the identity of the driver, but they believe the man called a friend who picked him up and drove him to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., where he was scheduled to undergo surgery on Feb. 23.
UHP conducts safety, weight checks in Grand and San Juan The Utah Highway Patrol recently completed safety and weight compliance checks on cargo trucks in Grand and San Juan counties Feb. 16-18. According to information provided by the UHP, troopers stopped a total of 137 semi-tractor trucks, and completed 125 inspections. Seventy-three vehicles were found to have “out of service” safety violations, and a total of 303 other violations were also found. Troopers took 42 out of service due to safety violations, and nine drivers were taken out of service. Of the 43 trucks weighed, 13, including several trucks owned by Grand County, were found in violation of weight requirements. Several companies were instructed on legal weights and bridging laws after being stopped and cited for overweight, according to the report.
Truck rollover blocks highway traffic A Fed-Ex truck rolled over on U.S. 191, closing the southbound lane of the highway for about two hours, the Utah Highway Patrol reported. A 41-year-old man from Salt Lake City was driving the semi with two trailers at about mile marker 143 when it crashed. Investigators said the vehicle drifted off the right side of the road, then the driver steered the vehicle back onto the road surface causing the last of the two trailers to flip onto their left side. No injuries were reported.
