BEACON operates on the mission of “empowering students to discover their innate ability to succeed,” and provides a variety of activities, tools and experiences to help meet that goal.
The BEACON program blends academic and social assistance.
“Universal access to afterschool activities and targeted student assistance makes BEACON distinctive in its multi-dimensional approach,” according to information provide by the program. “The purpose of the BEACON Academic Assistance Program is to close the achievement gap by providing academic support and social guidance to at-risk and struggling students.”
BEACON serves students in grades K-8 at three sites – Moab Charter School (K-6); Helen M. Knight Elementary (K-6); and Grand County Middle School (7-8). During the 2011-2012 school year, BEACON, which is funded primarily through grants, donations, program fees and fundraising events, served 616 students, officials said.
BEACON features arts and recreation clubs and activities, hands-on learning clubs for education that focus on math, reading, science, art, and a wide variety of other subjects, life skills programs, service clubs, career programs and sports. After school clubs that focus on help with academics, homework, study skills and tutoring are also options.
This year, BEACON is also offering a “family liaison” program, which is designed to help “bridge the gap between school and home,” officials said. The program provides education support and parenting skills for families. The program will also feature “family nights” and other celebrations throughout the school year.
BEACON is also launching a new Moab Strings Program in partnership with the Moab Music Festival. The program is for students in grades kindergarten through six at HMK and the Moab Charter School.
