On Tuesday, August 30th, the GCHS Lady Devil’s tennis team gave a strong showing at a home competition against Richfield and South Sevier. During the first match of the day, against Richfield, the Lady Devils played well, winning three of the five events.

Two of those wins came in singles play, and one in the Lady Devils’ doubles matchups. Grand’s Brianna Ballard won at No. 1 singles, and Lauren Keogh won, playing at No. 2 singles for Grand. Torrie Lopez, playing at No. 3 singles for the Lady Devils, lost her match against Richfield. The Lady Devils’ doubles team of Andrea Savarese and Brooklyn Richards also defeated Richfield. The No. 2 doubles team of Jaycey Johnson and Delayen Roberts lost their match to Richfield.

“We played very well,” said head coach Brian Ballard.

Later in the day, the team pulled off an even stronger showing against South Sevier, winning four of five events overall. All three Lady Devils’ singles players – Ballard, Keogh and Lopez – won their matches and the doubles team of Johnson and Roberts also defeated South Sevier, according to coach Ballard.

The Lady Devils have a team of 20 girls playing this year, Ballard said.

“We have a pretty good team this year, and we did very well this week,” he said. “We look forward to going further. We’ve even got brand new uniforms that we did fundraising for—it’s really been a positive thing.”

The Lady Devils were scheduled to play on Tuesday, Sept. 6 in Cedar City against Parowan and Millard, and will play a home match next Friday, Sept. 9 against San Juan.
