The Delicate Stitchers are celebrating their 15th anniversary this year and quilt guild members, and others in the community, have been busy creating works of art in anticipation of this very popular event, guild members said in a news release.
The show will feature antique, traditional and art quilts, quilted home décor and wearable art as well as the guild’s annual quilt challenges and mystery quilts. Tickets will be sold for a chance to win the “Opportunity Quilt,” created by guild members.
On Saturday, Bev Swift, instructor and lecturer, from Durango, will teach a half-day class on a “Creative Tucks” wall hanging that uses a dimensional, folded-flower technique. Participants will create a basic wall hanging or table piece, which can be embellished with borders, beads and crystals, according to the news release. The class fee is $30, which includes a pattern.
On Sunday, Gail Aspromonte, owner of Quilt It Ya Ya, in Aztec, N. M., will teach construction of a large grab-and-go bag, which has many pockets. The bag has a wide variety of uses, including use as a project, picnic, sewing, or diaper bag. The class fee is $39, which includes a pattern. Crystal Day, guild member and owner of It’s Sew Moab quilt shop, will be in the Merchants Mall, along with other vendors from Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. They will offer fabrics, patterns, threads, books and notions.
Moab quilter, and guild member, Sandra Starley, one of fewer than 100 accredited quilt appraisers in the nation, and one of only two in Utah, will also be at the Merchant Mall offering quilt appraisals for a fee. Starley’s years of study have given her knowledge of period fabrics and traditional quilt patterns, which allows her to determine the age of almost any quilt.
Door prizes will also be given hourly.
The Delicate Stitchers Quilt Guild was founded in 1998 by a group of women who realized there were many quilters in Moab and the surrounding area. They also recognized the need for an organized group that would foster this fiber art form, according to the news release. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Grand Center. A lesson is given at each meeting and members bring their projects, completed or in progress, for “show and tell.” This year, has been dubbed “A Year of Color” because lessons will be focused on learning how to use the color wheel as a tool when quilting, according to the news release.
The guild also participates in many charitable causes and is currently working with the Grand County RSVP program to make quilts for children and families going through personal crises. Dues are $15 per year. All quilters, and those interested in quilting, are welcome to join.
