According to HMK teacher and event judge Charlotte Quigley, third-place finisher Miranda Corbin, a sixth-grader at HMK, went out in the eighth round, having outlasted 17 other spellers from her school.
That left the Park brothers to duel it out for 66 more rounds. Kevin Park then misspelled the word “hiatus,” after which Teddy Park correctly spelled both “sturgeon” and “Basque” to win the event.
“It was very exciting, as they went to the end of the district bee list, and we then took words from last year’s district bee list – the difficult ones,” Quigley noted.
The top three district spelling bee winners from Grand, Emery, San Juan and Carbon school districts, as well as Pinnacle Academy, will compete in the regional spelling bee hosted by the Southeast Education Service Center. This year, the region spelling bee will be held Tuesday, March 4 at 1 p.m. at Green River High School.
