The Grand County High School varsity boys basketball team won a decisive 77-56 victory over the San Juan Broncos on Wednesday, Jan. 15 in Moab.

The home game against Grand’s arch rival set the stage for a fierce contest. In the first minutes of the game, Red Devils jumped out ahead of the Broncos, taking an early 9-0 lead.

By the end of the first half, the Red Devils had expanded their lead to more than 20 points ahead of the Broncos.

“We started out great. The defense was working really well and we definitely had them in the first half,” said the Red Devil’s head coach Brook Shumway.

The Broncos came back strong in the second half, cutting Grand’s lead to 12 points as the Red Devils struggled to effectively pass the ball.

“We were kind of all over in the third quarter. We didn’t pass very well,” said Shumway.

But the Red Devils managed to put their game back together in the fourth quarter to end the contest with the 21 point win over the Broncos.

GCHS senior Kaden Risenhoover led the Red Devils in scoring with 21 points. Fellow seniors Adam Jensionson, Koi Cook and Trevor Bertuzzi also scored in double-digits for the Red Devils.

“We had four kids who scored in double figures. It was great,” said Shumway.

With their first region victory on the books, the Red Devils are scheduled to play two more region games at home. Grand will take on the South Sevier Rams on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. The following afternoon, Saturday, Jan. 25 at 4:30 p.m., the Red Devils are scheduled to play the North Sevier Wolves.
