“We matched up well against them,” said GCHS head coach Dennis Wells. “We didn’t have a full team, but neither did San Juan.”
The first Red Devil senior to claim victory was heavyweight Edgar Gomez, who outdueled Chase Richmond, pinning him with 1:46 remaining in the second round.
Later in the match, Grand’s Gage Lindquist, who normally wrestles at 120 pounds but competed at the heavier 126-pound weight category in this match, took on Spencer Squires of San Juan. Lindquist secured a pin with 26 seconds left in the first round.
Fellow Red Devil senior Jacob Francis also wrestled up one weight, competing at 145 pounds instead of his usual category of 138 pounds. Francis pinned Cole Chamberlin with 1:17 remaining in the first round.
Also winning by pin was GCHS sophomore Seth Holyoak, who defeated Spencer Beck with 1:37 remaining in the third round of a hard-fought match. Holyoak was wrestling at 152 pounds, up from his normal category of 145 pounds.
GCHS freshman Tyler Shepherd faced 220-pound Josh Hunt of San Juan, who was over the allowed weight in the category and therefore lost the match by forfeit. The two competed in an exhibition match, with Hunt winning by a pin midway through the second round.
“That was Tyler’s first-ever match, and he did a good job,” Wells said.
In the 160-pound category, Richie Cordero of Grand got pinned by San Juan’s Jens Grover in the first round.
The remaining matches were decided by forfeit, with Grand winning four and losing two. Of those matches, the Red Devils who won by forfeit were John Corbin, wrestling at 106 pounds, Gage Moore at 113 pounds, Andrew Hugentobler at 132 pounds and Robert Allred at 138 pounds. In addition, the 120-pound and 195-pound weight classes were double forfeits, so no points were awarded to either team.
Senior wrestlers Lindquist, Gomez, and Francis were honored before the match, along with senior managers Haley Rice and Tiffanie Whipple. Grand has only one more home match remaining this season: a dual match against Dove Creek, Colo., scheduled for Jan. 29.
Grand’s next scheduled meet will be the 2A Duels tournament in Richfield on Jan. 3 and 4.
