The Grand County High School swim team placed fifth overall out of eight teams that participated in the Region 12 warm-up meet held Friday, Dec. 7 at Castle Dale.

According to GCHS head coach Brian Pierce, the Red Devils had only 10 swimmers at the meet, or roughly half the team. He said some team members were at a GCHS debate tournament or had other commitments. Even so, Grand’s girls managed to place fifth out of eight, while the Red Devil boys placed last among the six boys teams.

“Overall the kids did great,” said Pierce. “Their times are dropping every meet and they continue to make progress. I’m very pleased with their effort they put in the pool.”

Among the highlights of the meet: GCHS junior Jackson Knowles took placed fifth out of 14 swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 8.60 seconds.

“That time placed him just inside the top 50 [among 3A swimmers so far this season],” Pierce said, adding that Knowles also took fifth among the 21 boys swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle event. His time in that event was 2:18.01.

Also for the Red Devil boys, sophomore Duncan Reidhead came in 10th out of 28 competitors in the 100-yard freestyle with the time of 1:03.55, Pierce said.

Grand’s boys also took fifth out of 10 in the 200-yard (4x50-meter) freestyle relay with a time of 1:57.72. Swimming in that event were Drake Hackney, James Martin, Reidhead, and Knowles.

“If we’d had more people there we could have had a second relay team competing, and that would have helped us earn some more team points,” Pierce said.

Also competing for the Red Devil boys at the meet were River Murdock and Wiley Sheldon.

Competing for the Lady Devils last week were Brianna Ballard, Gabriel Martineau, Zarena Rigby, and Katie Winget.

This week, the Red Devil swimmers have two meets scheduled: a three-way meet against Emery High and Uintah High, at Castle Dale on Wednesday, Dec. 12, and the Tooele Invitational in Tooele, Utah on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15.
