A penalty kick in the second half of the Grand County-South Sevier game April 26 was the game changer as Red Devil senior Deklynd Chant found the back of the net for the 1-0 win — and gave a clean sheet to keeper Jacob Shumway.
The game, played at Monroe, saw a scoreless first half. Grand County was busy on the field, however, as they put together a total of 27 shots, 10 of which were on-goal. Red Devil junior Jaxen Saunders tallied up seven shots with three on-goals, while Miguel Dominguez and Richard Shumway each took five shots and recorded two on-goals apiece.
Playing all 80 minutes of the game, Jacob Shumway earned the clean sheet with a save on South Sevier’s sole shot-on-goal.
The victory atoned for a 2-0 loss to Richfield on April 24. In that game Shumway allowed two to get by, while saving four. Chant led the Red Devils with four shots and two on-goals.
The win against the Rams gives Grand County a 5-5 record both overall and in 3A Region 15 competition, good enough for a No. 4-seed headed into the playoffs. The Red Devils will start playoff action on Wednesday, May 3 against No. 2-seed Morgan on the road. A win would send Grand County to face either Carbon on the road, or Richfield at home, on Saturday, May 5.
