The Grand County High School boys’ golf team placed second to North Sanpete at last week’s region match, played Aug. 30 at the Palisade Golf Course in Sterling, near Manti.
Heading into the match, the Red Devils were trailing the first-place Hawks by five strokes in the overall Region 15 standings, but North Sanpete shot a blistering score of 301 to Grand’s total of 316, thereby extending their lead in the region to 20 strokes with two matches left to play in the regular season.
“North Sanpete is a tough team, and they play really well on that course,” said GCHS senior Alec Williams, who led the Red Devils with a score of 75. “We’re going to really have to step it up.”
Grand’s other three top scorers were senior Masen Ward, who had a 77, freshman Rafe Saunders, who shot an 81, and his older brother Jaxen Saunders, a junior, who shot an 83. Sophomore Luke Williams, Alec’s younger brother, also shot an 83.
Also shooting in the 80s for Grand were senior Brendon Woodard, who had an 85, junior Taylor Torgerson, with 86, and junior Kane Scherer, who shot 89. Only the top four individual scores are counted toward each team’s total score for the match.
The team scores for the match at Manti were as follows: North Sanpete was first with 301, Grand was second with 316, Richfield was third with 333, South Sevier was fourth with 335, Manti was fifth with 341, San Juan was sixth with 361 and Emery was seventh with 373.
The final two remaining region matches are Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Millsite course in Ferron (Emery’s home course) and Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the Cove View Golf Course in Richfield, with South Sevier hosting. The Region 15 championships will be Sept. 21 at Carbon, with the state tournament to be held on Oct. 4 and 5 at Cove View in Richfield.
