The Grand County High School boy’s basketball team scored back-to-back wins last week, defeating the San Juan Broncos and the Duchesne Eagles.

The Red Devils’ win against the Broncos on Thursday, Feb. 6 proved to be a a tight contest. San Juan got on the scoreboard first with a single free throw, but Grand soon began to rack up points with outside shots by seniors Koi Cook and Kaden Risenhoover.

“The boys got going and the rest of the team followed,” said Red Devil head coach Brook Shumway.

Though the Broncos scored first, the Red Devils never trailed their arch rival after the first minutes of the game. The Broncos fought to regain control of the game, cutting the Red Devils’ lead to single digits before Grand roared back to post a 10-point lead at the end of the first half.

“It was a tight game,” Shumway said. “They fought back and were really running the points board back and forth.”

By game’s end, the Red Devils held on to win by three points, 67-64.

Risenhoover put 16 points on the board for the Red Devils, followed closely by junior Jasen Christensen, who came off the bench to score 15 points in the second half.

Starting on the varsity team for the Red Devils were seniors Cook, Adam Jenkinson, Trevor Bertuzzi, Hunter Stitzer and junior Tanner White.

The following evening, Friday, Feb. 7, the Red Devils faced the Duchesne Eagles on Grand’s home court. The Eagles came out strong and led for the majority of the game as Grand struggled to keep the contest within reach.

But in the fourth quarter, the Red Devils’ defense kicked into high gear and held the Eagles to 10 points. Grand scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to propel the Red Devils to the 65-60 win.

Jenkinson and White helped cement Grand’s win in the last minutes of the game. White also showed strong defensive play for the Red Devils in the fourth quarter, as well as making several offensive free-throw shots.

Jenkinson and Risenhoover led in points scored for the game with 19 points each.

The Red Devils are scheduled to play North Sevier on Friday, Feb. 14 and South Sevier on Saturday, Feb. 15. Both are away games and are among Grand’s last region games before the qualifying contests for the state tournament get under way.
