As the official start of Moab’s tourist season nears, local businesses will soon be looking to hire employees while many area residents will be seeking jobs.
Employers and job seekers will have the opportunity to meet face-to-face next week during a job fair hosted by the Utah Department of Workforce Services (DWS). The job fair will be held Tuesday, Feb. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Moab Arts and Recreation Center, 111 East 100 North.
“Our goal is to connect people who are looking for work with employers who are trying to fill positions,” said Kelly Thornton, workforce development specialist for the Moab DWS office.
Individuals who are looking for jobs are encouraged to register early, through the DWS website at jobs.utah.gov, or in person at the agency’s Moab Employment Center, 457 Kane Creek Blvd.
Those who register at the employment center should bring a résumé and, if possible, a completed DWS master application, Thornton said. DWS employees will assist those who do not have a résumé prepared and can also offer help with strategies for approaching employers, she said.
Early registrants will also receive a ticket that provides them express admission to the job fair.
Job-seekers can also register at the time of the event, but must bring copies of their most recent résumé or the completed application. DWS employees will be on hand at the job fair to help those looking for work complete the application.
For employers, the job fair gives them the opportunity to meet with potential workers face-to-face and find out more about them.
“From the point of view of local businesses, this is an opportunity to meet a number of people at one time who are looking for work and to get an idea of who might meet the culture of your business the best,” said Ken Davey, economic development specialist for the city of Moab. “For job seekers, it’s an opportunity to see the kind of jobs that are out there and which ones meet your interests and ambitions.”
Thornton said approximately 20 area employers will be on hand at the event, which is also sponsored by Moab city, the Moab Area Chamber of Commerce, the Business Resource Center and the Business Expansion and Retention program. A wide variety of employers will be participating, including outfitters, restaurants, lodging establishments and federal agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management.
Char Pogue, Moab branch manager for Elwood Staffing-SOS Employment Group, said she is looking forward to meeting with potential employees. Pogue’s company matches up workers with employers who are looking for specific skill sets for short and long-term jobs.
“I have a lot of different positions I’m trying to fill, and it’s just very helpful to have that in-person time the job fair provides,” Pogue said. “First impressions are important. For us, the value [in the fair] is being able to meet a lot of prospective candidates at one time and have that face-to-face interaction.”
Pogue said SOS is currently seeking highly-skilled framers for the building industry, and workers who are skilled in concrete forms and finishing. The agency also has openings in merchandising, sales, housekeeping and maintenance, she said.
Employers who would like to take part in the job fair can still sign up, Thornton said. Employers should contact Thornton at 435-719-2630 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
