As we all know, this was not the canyon’s original name. When it was updated many years ago to reflect a more sensitive reality, there were no negative repercussions to the “historical fabric” of Grand County as far as I am aware. To update the name once again seems to me a logical step.
As Grandstaff Canyon, this beautiful spot would continue to be named after the same pioneer settler. I fail to see how any history would be “lost” as a result.
I commend Louis Williams for his extensive research, and agree completely that we as a community can, and should, be both historically accurate and racially sensitive.
